
AePreventive Education & Training unit is the major body of educating public on Drug Prevention, Island-wide, which has undertaken its activities based on provincial, district & community levels, from the grass-root to the top management. The main objective was to achieve targets stated in the corporate plan proposed for the year 2012-2016.
During the next five years the capacity of national, provincial, and civil society organizations in drug prevention will be strengthened by (a) sensitizing provincial level government officers, non-government organizations, private sector organizations, religious organizations and others about related to the drug problem (b) continuation of provincial task forces in each province (c) implementation of provincial plans of actions for each province (d) monitoring, evaluation and feedback on functioning of task forces and implementation of provincial action plans. To develop drug prevention capacity at provincial level trainings will be provided to Filed Officers/community leaders/Health Officers belong to Government Officers, Non Government Organizations and Community Base Organizations, Drug supply reduction training will be provided to Law Enforcement Officers and other relevant sectors such as Police, Excise, Custom , Department of Coast Guard and Armed Forces. To reduce vulnerability of students towards drug abuse the Board will strengthen schools by training, monitoring and strengthening through the school drug prevention programme conducted by the Ministry of Education and Provincial Education Offices by training of students, teachers & parents. To establish drug prevention as a norm in workplaces as drug prevention initiatives will be implemented in ten large workplaces annually. Added to this it was absorbed Private sector too in to this awareness programmes .
To raise awareness of the masses with especial emphasis on the youth in order to motivate them in drug prevention following will be implemented.It will be continued the one-year Diploma in Drug Abuse Management Studies programme launched in 2004 in collaboration with the University of Colombo will be supported and strengthened, locally and regionally as to promote formal education in addiction studies and as a necessary capacity building.
